Whether it's red wine, lipstick, oil or mud ̶ we've got some handy tips to help you keep calm and get that second date!
By Jeanette Nkwate
Even if you've done everything to avoid getting a stain on your impressive first date outfit, sometimes the perils of red wine, make-up, grass and much more, can annoyingly, make their way on your clothing at some point. And while there's no way of completely avoiding stains (unless you're willing to walk around in a plastic casing?), it isn't the end of the world (or your date) if you do get them. And with that in mind, we've put together some helpful tips to get you through it with a cool head!
Try not to panic
We know this is easier said than done: but try to keep your cool. If your stain was accident related, the likelihood is you'll create another sartorial misfortune if you get yourself into a fluster. So, take a breather and avoid the blame game. Trust us, it's very unattractive.
Ok, you have a stain but there are some things you can do to minimise the collateral damage. Water is a pretty safe bet when it comes to stain removal and when applied immediately will help prevent the stain from setting. So, if you get a spill or stain, calmly excuse yourself and head straight to the loo!
Rubbing doesn't help...
Now that you're in the loo (and your date can't see you), we know it's tempting to rub your latest stain into oblivion, especially if you’re worried about your favourite number! But trust us, vigorous scrubbing and rubbing will do nothing to salvage your much-loved item or help you get to that elusive next date.
… But blotting is a better option
Following on from what we said earlier, rubbing won't help but blotting could help save the day! Remember to remove extra liquid by blotting your clothes or scooping the excess off, before you start performing any military-like stain extractions.
Psst! If you're at a dinner date, use the tip of your knife to discreetly quickly ‘lift’ tomato sauces or melted chocolate, before your date notices!
And if nothing you do is working?
Don't stress if you've thrown everything but the kitchen sink at your stain and it's still not coming off. You can always employ the help of a professional after your date. Remember, it's just a stain and doesn't mean you won't get a second date. Who knows, maybe it'll even be a funny first-date anecdote to tell your wedding guests?
